Xylitol Gum

Chewing gum is not a new concept, it has been around for hundreds of years.  When it was first commercially made, it contained a lot of sugar. Today, many manufacturers produce sugar free gum because of the growing health concerns with over consumption of sugar. Sugar substitutes are used in place of sugars. There several that are used but xylitol is the one that has the least amount of side effects and the most benefits.

Xylitol has been used in foods since the 1960's. Diabetics have used it as a sugar substitute. In the early 1970s, researchers found that xylitol has the potential to prevent cavities. Today we know that xylitol in chewing gum does help prevent tooth decay. Here are other great facts about xylitol.

  • Xylitol is already in our body.
  • Our bodies make it.
  • It is found in berries, mushrooms, lettuce, corn on a cob etc.

  • Chewing xylitol gum inhibits dental plaque accumulation.
  • Prevents bacteria from attaching to teeth.
  • Bacteria can not metabolize xylitol- it starves the bacteria.
  • On the other hand bacteria love sugar.

  • In small amounts it is safe.
  • Chewing xylitol gum 3-5 times a day is a safe amount.
  • FDA approved as a food additive.

  • Can have it any time.
  • Do not have to change your schedule or routine.

  • It is a fun way to prevent cavities.
  • Children do not even know that they are taking care of their teeth.

The fact is chewing xylitol gum can prevent cavities. Our advice is to use it three to five times a day especially after eating.

Dear Dr. Dilger:

It all started with my initial phone call to Dr. Dilger's office. I felt so comfortable from the start and after I came in for my first visit it's been all about what I want and what Dr. Dilger and his staff recommends for me. All around, it's been the best dental experience I've ever had.

Going to the dentist used to be a nightmare experience for me. That's all changed when I came to Dr. Dilger. Dr. Dilger's office staff are so warm and welcoming. Visiting them is like going home. Dr. Dilger's calm and caring manner erased all my dental anxiety and for the first time in my life I found myself relaxed in a dental chair. Dr. Dilger and his staff really took the time to get to know me and my concerns. They talked with me about my fears and helped me address my anxiety. Now I visit the dentist and I'm not afraid. I can not express the difference Dr. Dilger has made in my dental life! Thanks so much Dr. D.

I love my new smile.  It was so easy too.  Nearly pain free.  I am considering my lower teeth at a later date.
